Oftentimes after Lifeguard’s crews transfer care of a patient to the hospital, they do not learn the patient’s outcome. In September, one of Lifeguard-Santa Rosa County’s crews responded to a motor vehicle accident that was the result of a cardiac arrest situation. After several months of not knowing the outcome, the hospital coordinated a meet and greet with the first responders involved at the request of the patient.

On January 20, West Florida Hospital hosted a reception for this patient, his family, and all of those involved in his care, including representatives from the communications center, fire department, EMS, ER, and cath lab.The patient and his wife sincerely expressed their gratitude and thankfulness for the care provided in helping him on his way to recovery. He had a tough year that included cancer, radiation, chemotherapy, and a heart attack. Nevertheless throughout his struggles, he remained positive and grateful for the additional time he has been given with his family. As the patient, his family, pastor, and friends spoke to the group, emotions and tears were present among many of those in attendance. The bystander who assisted in the patient’s initial care was one of the few involved unable to attend the celebration; however, the bystander was recognized at a later date and personally thanked by communications and Lifeguard’s supervisors for his role in initiating CPR.

Lifeguard would like to also thank the other first responders and hospital for their team efforts and advanced thinking in the care of the patient:
